Celtic v Real Madrid: “The reason we play this football is to win,” Ange Postecoglou

Ange Postecoglou handled brilliantly the mainstream media during his Champions League press conference  as they questioned his attack plans for this evening’s match against the defending European Champions.

The Celtic manager repeatedly explained that his Celtic side will maintain the fast free-flowing football they have been showing already this season, play their football, test themselves against the best and take the game to Real Madrid.

“I think it’s why we’ve been so consistent because the players have a clear understanding of what we need to do every week irrespective of the opponent. There are certainly different approaches you can take; I’ve said that a million times. There are a million ways you can be successful in the game of football,” the Celtic manager said.

“If we change our tactics every week, and we were that kind of team, and we were successful, then the players would be expecting that tomorrow night. I keep saying the reason we play this football is to win. Thats it. There’s no other reason for it,” Ange added.

“I love that it’s exciting. I love that our supporters love it. I think that’s important, but if it wasn’t successful, I wouldn’t do it.”

The Celtic leader also responded brilliantly to questions about the risks involved in playing his brand of attacking football against the Champions of Europe. “Well, if there is a system that doesn’t give you risks, I’d love to hear it. If there’s something you can guarantee me tomorrow night that if I played this way, you’re guaranteed to minimise risk. But it doesn’t exist.”

“Any system you play, any approach you take, there is an inherent risk. But there is also sometimes, the greater the risk, the greater the opportunity because we’re trying to do things a little bit differently. We don’t want to be like every other team. With that, there is always that possibility that you’ll stumble. That’s fine; stumbled in the past, but the important thing is you dust yourself off and keep going.”

Ange seems relaxed about going into Champions League Group stages with his team playing attacking football, same as always, despite any potential risks, and with the current form of this exciting Celtic side,  with their ability to press then really move the ball around quickly, the Spanish giants should be in for a really tough Tuesday night at Celtic Park.
