Fading Celtic target Fausto Vera “50/50” on Argentinos Juniors departure amidst Genk’s improved bid

Rumoured Celtic target Fausto Vera has revealed that a move a away from his current club Aregntinos Juniors is “50/50”, depending on how events pan out. The defensive midfielder was supposedly seen as an alternative to the highly sought after Vinicius Souza, once he decided to put the chase to bed and join Spanish side Espanyol on-loan for the season.

Now with Celtic on the cusp of signing free agent Aaron Mooy, it would seem unlikely that we would be still in the race for a player who is set to cost around £5 million. Nevertheless, Vera has not extinguished all hope that we may still be in the reckoning for his services, according to a report by Daily Record. They have claimed that Vera could still head for Europe this summer transfer window, despite his club being in a title fight.

Journalist Cesar Luis Merlo, who works for TYC Sports in Buenos Aires, has explained that Genk and Corinthians are interested but that both had initial bids of around £3.4 million rejected by Juniors as they hold out for £5.5 million. A Belgian publication by the name of Voetbal Nieuws has also verified that the Jupiler Pro League side have made an improved bid – thought to be in the region of £5 million or so.

The player himself spoke to TYC Sports in his homeland and explained that he is 50/50 to leave Argentinos this month. He said: “I like Europe, also the South American leagues that mean football growth for me and in my life, it would be a beautiful challenge. It’s because there are rumours from South America, Europe, I feel prepared to face any challenge.”

“Negotiations are taken care of by my representative, along with the managers. I think about playing, enjoying, I always want to play in order to help the team. I have that in my head and I let these things be resolved by them. I would tell you that today the chance of leaving is at a 5 (out of 10). There can always be offers and polls. But until the decision is made and the papers are signed, I’m still here at the club. The possibility of taking a leap in my career, the truth is that it’s what I want”

Although we are about to add Aaron Mooy, many fans will be feeling like we still need that definitive defensive midfielder to shield our defenders. European competition is especially important to safeguard the back four from exposure to, which can be difficult with the way Ange Postecoglou likes his team to play. In the games against Rapid Vienna and Blackburn Rovers, the glaring deficiencies were apparent in that shielding role in midfield.

I think many would agree that a strong, aggressive and physical sitting midfielder wouldn’t go amiss. The question is, are we going to be in the market for one still after signing Mooy?

It remains to be seen for now…

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.

  1. Yep,Vera is maybe for sale for £5-6m,a bargain at that price, but,we are outbid by the mighty Genk. I would have forgot about Jenz and Mooy in an effort to get him tbh.
