A monumental night in Paradise for Celtic’s very special Ghirls

Celtic FC Women last night beat top of the table Glasgow City to keep themselves in with a chance of winning the title.

A bumper crowd of 9553, a Scottish record for an SWPL1 game were present in Celtic Park to give the Ghirls their backing and it made for a wonderful atmosphere. The Celtic end was absolutely rocking!

The magnificent backing spurred the side on to a 3-1 victory after falling one goal behind in the first half. This result gives Fran Alonso’s side a big chance going into the last two games in their quest to become Scottish Champions for the first time ever. Fingers crossed they achieve just that.

The women’s game doesn’t receive the best of coverage (with some notable exceptions in The Celtic Star and The Cynic) , and admittedly without sounding patronising, it is not as high profile or in the same quality as the men’s game, but women’s football is starting to get the attention it deserves around the globe, and rightly so.

In Scotland the past few years it has been taking off big time. I myself admittedly had no previous interest in the woman’s game, but thanks to the exposure Fran Alonso’s side have received, especially on social media, I have seen myself keeping updated with the results of the Celtic FC Women’s side. Many others are undoubtedly the same.

Last night’s crowd was only a good thing and will hopefully lead to similar or even bigger crowds for the woman’s games in. future . Last night was not only a big win on the park for the Ghirls, but a big one off it.
