With the injury list growing by the minute at the club, particularly at centre back, could a recall for Liam Scales be on the cards this weekend against St Johnstone at Celtic Park?
The Irishman has been linked with a move to Aberdeen, but with the current injury crisis he could yet see himself dramatically recalled to the Celtic starting line up this weekend.
And don’t be surprised if Brendan Rodgers looks at playing Alistair Johnston as a central defender. The right back has of course played in the centre of defence for Canada so would be able to stand-in for Celtic and provide added muscle, especially with the match the following weekend at Ibrox in mind.
And of course Brendan Rodgers could always look to the transfer market to add an additional central defender after receiving a triple blow this week, losing Stephen Welsh then Maik Nawrocki through injury then hearing that Cameron Carter-Vickers, who limped off at the interval at Pittodrie, is set for an extended period on the sidelines.
Liam Scales performed very well at Aberdeen last term while out on loan so he knows the league well enough. He also performed well in pre-season at Celtic so it could make perfect sense.
He’s also naturally left footed so he could slot into the left hand side of defence alongside Gustav Lagerbielke starting on Saturday against St Johnstone at Celtic Park. It’s not ideal but with our current injury status needs must. It would also give Liam and Gustav a chance to play together before the Glasgow Derby at Ibrox a week on Sunday.
Liam has worked well in pre season and has the benefit of first team football after a year at Aberdeen. It could be a gamble but it could also prove to be a masterstroke.
Liam will be bursting a gut to prove he has a future at the club under Brendan. He might well get that chance when it seemed he was out of the picture. Let’s hope he grabs the opportunity with both hands. It will benefit both him and the team.
But don’t rule out Alistair Johnston getting the nod at Ibrox.
