On this day in 1980, Celtic thumped Hibernian 5-0 in the semi final of the Scottish Cup. The result made a statement to Scottish football, Celtic meant business and were out to win the trophy.

Rangers also won that day, beating Aberdeen to set up a Glasgow derby cup final, which the ‘Gers lost and then a riot ensured, but that’s another story!

Over 32,000 people went to Hampden Park for the game, in which George Best couldn’t even inspire a Hibernian side that performed dreadfully on the day.

Bobby Lennox put Celtic ahead inside nine minutes, and the rest of the half was cagey. In the second 45 it was a different story as Provan, Doyle, MacLeod and McAdam gave Celtic a tremendous 5-0 victory.

The journalists of the time had some football news to report, which must have been interesting rather than fundraising for certain club’s ink supplies to write out daily statements.
