A title for Tommy – Celtic’s emotional, extra-special 2008 title triumph at Tannadice

The 2008 league championship win at Tannadice was a magnificent night. Every title win is special, especially the ones that are won on the last game of the campaign, but this one was extra special and more emotional due to the death of Tommy Burns just a week earlier.

Tommy was of course a Celtic legend, but more importantly he was a wonderful human being, so his death hit both the supporters and players equally as hard. In fact everyone connected to Celtic and the Scottish game were deeply effected by his passing such was the fondness for the man.

The stage was set in Tannadice Dundee. May the 22nd 2008. One of the most popular members of the Celtic family had breathed his last and it was title clinching night. Nothing less than a victory would suffice.

We wouldn’t disappoint Tommy as big Jan Vennegoor of Heesslink leaped high to bullet a trademark header in the 72nd minute to secure victory and the title. The big Dutchman pointed his finger to the sky in celebration. That was Jan saying, this one’s for you Tommy.

For Tommy it was, and as the final whistle sounded, the supporters, players, management, directors, and everyone connected to the club celebrated winning the championship that a few months before seemed near impossible.

Tears of both joy and sadness were shed as the one man who should’ve been here to witness it was gone. Tommy was a Celtic great, but he was also a supporter. He would have loved this moment as much as anyone. Although I’m sure he was watching from above and he would have been very proud.

This was indeed a title for Tommy. God bless.

An ordinary everyday Celtic supporters hailing and still residing in Govan in the shadows of the enemy. I’m a season ticket holder. I Witnessed my first Celtic game in 1988 and have attended when I can ever since. Growing up in the 90s I witnessed Celtic at their lowest, and now appreciate the historic success we enjoy today. I enjoy writing about this wonderful football club and hopefully will continue to do so. I’ve always been a keen writer and initially started this a hobby. My ambition is to one day become as good an author as my fellow Celtic Star colleagues.

Was the first title won for me since I moved to Canada the emotion i felt when we won is still after 15 years hard to describe. Tommy is my all time favourite celt and watching the tears on the field from the players and coaching staff still gets to me today.
