Adam Idah’s strike in the dying embers of the match yesterday was poetic justice, after the Alan Muir VAR controversy at Easter Road last time out against Hibs…
The VAR room operator took a punt on whether or not the ball had crossed the byline for Daizen Maeda’s equalising goal in Edinburgh that afternoon, with it inconclusive from the images of Alistair Johnston’s foot and the ball.
Nevertheless, the man who watched Inverness Caley Thistle blatantly handball and prevent a near certain goal at Hamden Park all those years ago to prevent a Treble, saw fit to have adjudged the ball being out of the field of play, without any categorical evidence to support his conclusion. The audio which had been released last week was damning of the official and calls into question his integrity.
That injustice was rectified at Celtic Park this weekend in more ways than one, as Celtic not only beat Hibs comfortably on the day, but the goal that sealed the win from Adam Idah was not too dissimilar to the one in which Maeda had scored with at Easter Road, before being chopped off erroneously, due to Muir’s – let’s be generous and say rank incompetence.
The move down the right-hand side between the much improved Yang Hyun-jun and super sub, Luke McCowan, was superb and caught Hibernian out cold. Yang’s clever pass down the line into the path of the on-running midfielder went all the way to the byline, with Luke just catching it as the ball went onto the line, but not over it so as to be out of play. It was a moment that felt as if poetic justice has been served, following that abysmal officiating in Leith in the previous fixture.
