Ange’s Media Conference: “What is that guy on about?”

Ange Postecoglou spoke to the media today ahead of the trip to Dingwall tomorrow evening to take on Ross County as Celtic begin their defence of the League Cup, the first trophy won by the Celtic manager last December with a 2-1 win over Hibs in the final.

There were fewer questions at today’s Media Conference , just eight in total and it doesn’t look like anyone from the Celtic fan media was present.  It appears to have been four mainstream media journalists asking the questions of the Celtic manager with the chap who asked the third question of the day having an absolute nightmare.

He framed his question around only Malky Mackay at Ross County still being in place at a Premiership club since Ange walked in the door at Celtic. The mainstream media journalist asked Ange this question…

Since the day you walked into Celtic Park only Malky Mackay, is still at the same club in the Scottish Premiership. Is that an indication of the transient nature of what you are talking about in terms of the quick turnover of managers?

Ange immediately pointed out that Robbie Neilson was still at Hearts unless the hack knew something he didn’t! The Celtic manager could also have mentioned David Martindale at Livingston, who was yesterday speaking about Ange in glowing terms, or even Callum Davidson who has won both the League Cup and Scottish Cup and also saved St Johnstone from relegation last season and is still in the job.

Ange’s answer for the record, was as follows:

Yes. Robbie Neilson is still there as well unless you have got some news that I don’t. As I said it is the nature of football in the current climate and I don’t see it changing because there is such a real and visceral response to things these days because there are so many opinions and so many external pressures and scrutiny on everything that happens.

“I’ve said in the past when I first started managing you could wait until Monday’s papers before the pressure started but nowadays after the full-time whistle, there is already stuff happening. It’s just the world we live in. Most people when they are looking for some sort of correction feel that change is the best way to go. That’s kind of the nature of the roles we are in. Every manager understands that.”

With just a dozen clubs to check through that question was so inaccurate that it’s somewhat embarrassing. And the Celtic supporters who have listened to today’s Media Conference on You Tube have picked up on this hack’s failings. Here are some examples of their views on the incident….

“Ange having to correct the Scottish sports professional journalists on how to do their job…imagine that.”

“Shows the standard of Scottish journalism that a guy frames his entire question around how many coaches have stayed in a job since Ange has been here and Ange needs to correct him. There’s only 12 teams in the league for heaven’s sake! Quality research, mate.”

“Big Ange has got the Scottish Mainstream Media in his back pocket, they are all in awe of him.”

“I say it all the time, but Celtic really need to give these clowns less question time and give more of it to fan media. They ask actual questions rather than baiting for a headline.”

“What is that guy on about? Martindale still at Livi, Neilson still at Hearts.”

“These questions are moronic from a media who keep telling us it’s the same club at Ibrox. Shameful.”

“David Martindale, Robbie Neilson, Callum Davidson all still in jobs since Ange came in. WHAT A POOR Question from that journalist.”

“‘Robbie is still there..’ Big Ange keeping the muppets on the right side of the facts.”

“Ange more informed than the guy who prepared the question about managers still in post. Ange quiet but well up on the knowledge.”

“What was that Jack Ross question along with the “managers leaving” question, those folk get paid to ask this nonsense, absolutely woeful and terrible journalism in Scotland.”

“Who is the guy asking questions about coaches in job and enjoying it while it lasts? What has that got to do with football in a week we play Ross County, (the)Rangers and Real Madrid? Scottish media absolute clowns who think they are football experts.”

And the video has not long gone up on You Tube so we expect there will be many more similar comments to follow!

We’ll cover what was said at today’s Media Conference in more detail next and while we’re doing that you can watch for yourselves below…
