Arthur Numan has described getting abuse from Rangers supporters after admitting that Celtic’s anthem ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ was one of his favourite songs. The Gerry and the Pacemakers classic is often heard before kick-off at Celtic Park and the Dutch star selected it in an interview shortly after joining the Ibrox club.
Speaking to FourFourTwo the right-back detailed that he was the subject to abuse from supporters of his new club as well as new teammates after telling a reporter that ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ was his favourite song.
“I was asked to name my favourite song and replied, You’ll Never Walk Alone by Gerry and the Pacemakers.
“I noticed there was a short silence among the reporters, which was odd. The next day, I got killed for my remark, both at the club and on the streets.
“People yelled, little did I know, it was a song adopted by Celtic fans! In the tabloids, there was a huge headline reading: ‘Numan’s favourite song: You’ll Never Walk Alone’. What a start that was.
“Before my first game against Celtic, my Scottish team-mates jokingly said, ‘Don’t you dare sing along!'”
There will be no fans singing the anthem at the Hampden when Celtic play Hearts at the weekend so here is the Celtic fans singing it after we won the Scottish Cup last year. Celtic can win a quadruple treble if they can beat the Championship side in the rearranged final.
At long last, a refreshingly honest comment from a retired player from the old original rangers.
