Auston Trusty fits Brendan’s bill as £6m deal is confirmed

Auston Trusty has been confirmed as Celtic’s latest transfer arrival after the central defender arrived on a five-year deal. The 26-year-old joins for a fee in the region of £6m as Brendan Rodgers got someone that provided pace and power to his side.

Speaking to the club website, Rodgers said that he was pleased with the arrival while listing the attributes that the manager has publicly stated he wanted.

“We are so pleased to sign Auston and he is a really welcome addition to our squad.

“He is a quick, strong, athletic defender with great ability and good experience and a player who has done really well to make his way to the USA national squad.

“We are really looking forward to working with Auston. I know he is really excited to be joining Celtic and looking forward to facing the challenges ahead and playing his part as we strive to bring our fans success once again.”

Meanwhile, Trusty said that he has spoken with the manager, who has told him that Celtic will allow him to thrive as a player.

“The manager told me to be the best that I can be, that’s off the pitch, as a teammate and everything on the pitch.

“He said that he believes in me and believes in everything I can do, it’s up to me and he’ll provide me with the environment where I can thrive.

“I’m looking forward to meeting all the guys as well. From what I’ve heard it’s a great environment around the club too so I’m looking forward to it.”

Rodgers has been eager to strengthen the side with pace and power and the club have taken a while to get their business done but they have got themselves into gear in the closing stages of the window. Arne Engels is expected to complete his £11m move from Augsburg later today with the club still working away for other deals as they prepare to compete on all fronts.

Trusty will go into the squad for Sunday’s game against Rangers if international clearance all goes as planned. It is unlikely that he will start the game with Liam Scales expected to be partnering Cameron Carter-Vickers in the backline.
