BBC’s Tom English diminishes Brendan’s success due to ‘hopeless’ rivals, so what about Walter?

First time around for Brendan Rodgers was apparently easy, similar to what it was like for ‘Walter’ then?…

The return of Brendan Rodgers to Celtic has been met with the usual deniable delusion from the blue half of Glasgow and Tom English at BBC Scotland. They just won’t admit we’ve snapped up a class act, top level elite coach to replace Ange Postecoglou. Brendan Rodgers is a man who strikes fear into their hearts.

They are quick to point out that Brendan’s success first time around was due to being up against a poor (the)Rangers side. Correct, it was a poor Rangers side, but you can only jump the hurdle that is in front of you. Although funnily enough at the time theRangers supporters were telling you how good their side was, it’s not like them to tell lies is it?

27 May 2017 Hampden Park Scottish Cup Final 2017 Celtic v Aberdeen. Celtic win the 2017 Scottish Cup ,Manager Brendan Rodgers lifts the trophy

Brendan Rodgers won a double treble and laid on the foundations for a third in his time here. That’s impressive no matter the opposition in your domestic league.

The beloved Sir Walter Smith of the now defunct Rangers FC couldn’t even conjure up that sort of success in his two spells at the deceased club.

In his first spell he was up against a troubled (and skint) Celtic side with problems on and off the park, and Walter was armed with the budget of a bank, quite literally as it turned out. His side were so far ahead of everyone thanks to Minty’s borrowed multi-millions it was scary.

This was of course an era when they won 9 in a row, has that also got a question mark hanging over it due to the lack of serious competition? It was easy pickings for them back then, so should Walter’s achievements be called into question? Did the likes of Chic Young or Jim Traynor on the BBC do that or was the the lamb David Murray served just too succulent?

‘Walter’ is regarded as royalty by the SMSM and the Rangers supporters. That Rangers side is regarded by some as their best ever. It didn’t matter that Walter was splashing cash on international superstars, or that Celtic had to rely on the likes of Mark McNally and Mike Galloway. Far from it…

I Witnessed my first Celtic game in 1988 and have attended when I can ever since. Growing up in the 90s I witnessed Celtic at their lowest, and now appreciate the historic success we enjoy today. I enjoy writing about this wonderful football club and hopefully will continue to do so. I’ve always been a keen writer and initially started this a hobby. My ambition is to one day become as good an author as my fellow Celtic Star colleagues.

  1. I think the point is that while winning those trophies was great for us it is of absolutely no use in determining how good a manager is. Was listening to a Leicester fan last night saying that Brendan has to take his share of the blame in the club getting relegated. Including an inability to change tactics etc during the course of a game. The same guy wonders how he will get on without his sidekick Davies. In other words he’s no wonder manager. They say he is a great coach, unfortunately he is being employed to be a manager.
