Best of luck to Kieran Tierney over in the beautiful city of San Sebastián

It would have been great for Celtic to have signed Kieran Tierney, but we wish him well for his time over in the beautiful city of San Sebastián in the Basque Country…

Kieran Tierney was linked for a while with a return to Celtic on loan, but that’s been kiboshed after he sealed a season long loan move to La Liga side Real Sociedad.

Whether there was any substance to a move back up north for the Arsenal man is another thing. Sociedad have been rumoured to be paying his full salary which is rumoured to be £110k a week, so I very much doubt he was ever that close to a dream return to Celtic Park.

Some Celtic supporters still feel a little bit wary towards KT after his move to Arsenal, but he’s an ambitious lad and moving to a top league on big wages would have been hard for him to turn down, even as a Celtic supporter. It was an offer most would find hard to refuse and let’s be honest, it suited Celtic to sell a home grown Celtic Academy player for £25million.

After an excellent start at the Emirates it’s turned rather sour for the Scotland man last season. Why that is the case is a complete mystery as he was being tipped as the next Arsenal captain at one point.  He’s still a popular figure with the Gunners support so rumours of a fall out with Mikel Arteta most likely have a ring of truth about it.

Kieran Tierney is a class act and Arsenal’s loss is Real Sociedad’s gain. Moving to Spain and playing for a decent club who will compete in the Champions League this year is a great move for him. We should wish him all the best and hope he’s a success, as I’m sure he will be. Maybe in a few years time, the door will open for him to see out the last few seasons of his career playing for Celtic again.

All the best KT, hope you smash it.

  1. Thank god the silly season is finally over! Kieran coming back was NEVER an option. Mad that so many media and blogs acted as if it was a possibility. Even if the salary issue could have been addressed (how??) it would have been a step back for KT and almost an admission of “not good enough” for the EPL. A year in La Liga means he’ll show his value again playing regularly at a top competitive level and move permanently to one of the top leagues.
Every talent we develop has the right to progress to a better level and that should be an ambition we all respect. Full respect too to those who choose to be one-club Celtic men like our amazing captain Callum. The few who criticise players or managers who aspire to a higher standard need to grow up and wise up. I’m very proud of who we are and our principles but we need to recognise that the Scottish Premiership is not a major league. It would be a better use of our time and energy is we could link with other club’s supporters to get rid of the parasites at SFA/SPFL who have done so little to reverse the decline in our game over the last few decades.

  2. San Sébastien or Glasgow? Mmmmm! The Basque Country every time!
    Kieran will experience another culture.

Scotland is becoming a backward country …….. fast!!!! Out of EU and probably soon to be out of Europe.
Celtic can’t even keep ahead of the mediocrity here with the utterly shambolic Board that we have.
Our Board allowed utter incompetents to run our game and have done nothing about it!
    Utterly demoralising!!

  3. I think he gets an easy ride. He is supposed to be Celtic through and through – a simple wage cut and he could have come on loan and moved back at end of his contract. It’s sad for me that he didnt do that.

  4. He left us the first chance he got and you’re all acting like wee daft schoolboys wanting their hero back , the only green he’s interested in is on pound notes , Celtic man my arse .

  5. Stevie and Mark, you’ve lost me completely. We took KT on as a kid, encouraged and coached him and gave him the chance to show he was good enough for the 1st team. He grabbed that chance with support from Emilio and grew as a player. He gave us everything through talent, hard work and talent.
Obviously, that was recognised by bigger, richer leagues and we were offered more money than any Celtic player had ever attracted as a transfer fee. Since KT moved, he’s has continued to declare his respect and passion for Celtic. He is an excellent ambassador. Why would he move back at this stage in his career? Why do you think he should take a wage cut? Why do you doubt his Celtic credentials? And, finally, what chance do we have to attract young talent competing against clubs much richer than we are (through no fault of ours) if we are then going to call them traitors if they then develop enough to move on? Get real guys!!
