Bologna manager Thiago Motta has clarified why Sydney van Hooijdonk missed Saturday’s draw against AC Milan. SVH, who is the son of former Celtic striker Pierre, has been linked with the club in the last few months as Brendan Rodgers’ side looks for reinforcements to his attacking line.

TNT said that the player was absent due to a pending move to Celtic; however, the Bologna boss said that he was absent due to illness while admitting that the Dutch forward could depart in the final days of the window.

“We’ll see if in the end he stays here or not, the important thing is that he always trains to the maximum.”

The striker has made 16 appearances for the Serie A side, scoring once. Although, with NAC Breda and SC Heerenveen, van Hooijdonk scored 49 goals 124 appearances in the Netherlands. With a hit rate like that, Celtic could benefit in a similar way to Giorgos Giakoumakis, who was signed from VVV-Venlo in 2021.

Celtic have been toiling in the transfer window so far with just Nicolas Kuhn signing from Rapid Vienna. The manager has been clear on wanting quality and so far that has not been delivered with key positions – up front and at left back – requiring additions.

The manager has said that the plan is to add two players to the squad in the final days of the window. Hopefully, the week will bring some rumours and then some additions.
