Brendan rejected a staggering £8million up front to stay at Celtic

HOW many people would turn down that sort of money to remain in their current job? And how many people are so highly regarded in the work that they do that they could attract that sort of money in an attempt to secure their services?

Not many. Celtic are very fortunate indeed to have Brendan Rodgers at the club. He has delivered two trebles on the bounce and an unheard of treble treble is still on the cards after last night’s victory in the quarter finals won us a place at Hampden, or is it going to be Murrayfield, for the semi-final of the Betfred Cup next month.

Celtic are away to Leipzig in the Europa League on the Thursday evening so can’t be expected to play at Hampden on the Saturday so it seems that one of the ties will be played at Murrayfield and the other at Hampden – both on the Sunday.

It will be interesting to see how that one pans out today, but back to Brendan.

We have given our opinion previously – that Brendan Rodgers is the most important employee that the club has had since Henrik Larsson – and the numbers that have been spoken about regarding his job offer from China backs that up.

Speaking after the 1-0 win at McDiarmid Park last night, Rodgers outlined what had happened.

“Since I’ve been at Celtic the last couple of years I’ve had a few offers, so that’s no different to any of the others.

“My focus is very much on Celtic and being here. And trying to help us rise to the challenge of this season. There’s nothing more really to say on that.

“What you know with China is that it’s an awful lot of money. But I’ve found happiness here and I spoke with the owners of the club and the board and we found an agreement and we move on.

“I’ve had other opportunities, but I’ve still got this year and another two years on my contract and unless they get fed up with me or something else happens I’m very privileged to be here.’

Stephen Mcgowan at Daily Mail reports on the numbers that were on offer to the Celtic manager.

“The Parkhead boss was offered a staggering £8million up front to head to the Chinese Super League and could have multiplied his current £2.4m a year salary,” he wrote.

And yet there are still those who would undermine Brendan from within our club and within our support – incredible really!
