BRENDAN RODGERS has selected the Invincible Treble final as a game that he would like to relive. Speaking to Sky Sports Football Show, the Irishman was asked to pick a game that he could go back and experience and the former Celtic boss selected the game in May 2017 as Celtic became Invincibles.
Aberdeen went ahead through a Jonny Hayes strike before Stuart Armstrong struck to level things up straight away leaving the game on a knife edge with both sides missing chances to take the lead. In injury time, Tom Rogic picked up a pass from Armstrong before dancing through the dogged Aberdeen defenders and slotting the ball beyond Joe Lewis.
“But I suppose as a career, if I was to look at it and choose one, I would always go back to the day we won the Treble and became totally Invincible at Celtic.
“We beat Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup Final to win the Treble. It was only the third Treble in the history of the club and that day, that feeling, was just absolutely amazing for everyone; family, friends, supporters and the players.
“I would go back to that feeling and probably enjoy it even more than I did that day.”
“As a special event with the pressure and everything that was around that first season.
“I was aware of the history of the club so I knew it had only been done by two other managers before.
“You try to keep it cool and you try to stay focused.
“But that realisation of going into history was absolutely incredible, and how we won it.
“We won it in extra-time, the last minutes of the game, it was just a phenomenal feeling.”
Aside from his dubious exit, Rodgers’ time at Celtic was sensational and that moment when Rogic’s shot hit the net was nothing short of incredible. The Invincible season will not be repeated again and most Celtic supporters would love to relive that season but that particular game was so special. Here is my look back at the 2017 Scottish Cup Final.
Celtic has often been described as a fairytale and that ending was destined to play out in the way it did, maximising elation 50 years after the club’s greatest triumph in Lisbon.
Moments like that make you miss the football enormously and hopefully we will be back soon.
