Skipper, Scott Brown, is set to make his 701st competitive club appearance against Motherwell tonight. An undoubted giant of the Scottish game, Broony played on 142 occasions for his first senior club, Hibernian, helping the side to their first trophy in 16 years, when they defeated Kilmarnock (5-1) in the 2007 League Cup final. That summer, the midfielder swapped Edinburgh for Glasgow, signing for Celtic in a record £4.5m deal between two Scottish clubs.
Since joining the Hoops, Brown has been an absolute colossus. He picked up the SPFA Players’ Player of the Year award for the 2008/09 season and was promptly named Club Captain, when Stephen McManus departed Celtic in a loan move to Middlesbrough at the end of January 2010.
Few could have imagined the success of Scott’s leadership. Indeed, he has steered Celtic to eight consecutive league titles, five Scottish Cups, five League Cups, an Invincible treble, double treble and treble treble, as captain! The fact that these honours add to another league title won with the club in 2007/08 and a League Cup triumph in 2008/09, means his astonishing trophy haul totals at 21 major honours at the time of writing (20 with Celtic).
Much like a fine wine, Broony seems to get better with age, as evidenced by his second SPFA Players’ Player of the Year award following the 2017/18 season, at the age of 32. The Celtic legend also won the SFWA Footballer of the Year award that same season, whilst he has been named in the PFA Team of the Year on no fewer than six occasions, between 2006/07 and 2018/19.
We wish Broony the best of luck this evening as the Bhoys look to continue their phenomenal away form with another three points at Fir Park. Motherwell currently sit in 3rd place in the SPFL table and are tough to beat on home soil… just the type of occasion in which our leader thrives.
