Broony hails Lawwell – proudly thanks former exec for ‘personal touch’

‘Thank yous’ have been pouring in for Peter Lawwell from the majority of the Celtic family today, and now it is Scott Brown’s turn to have paid a fitting final farewell to Lawwell following his resignation announcement today – with the skipper crediting Lawwell’s actions following his sister’s death as “the things he will remember about him.”

Many, including the Green Brigade, have celebrated Peter’s departure, claiming it is ‘one down, one to go’ with Neil Lennon the next man they want to be forced out of the door. However, many people do not know about the good that Lawwell has gone to throughout his career as CEO.

Scott’s sister Fiona tragically passed away in 2008 from skin cancer, and Brown credits the personal touch that Lawwell came to him with to make sure he wasn’t alone in his grievance – something that is exemplary of how the Celtic family aim to behave. Reportedly close to giving up football, Lawwell gave Broony all the help he needed to get back onto his feet, and this coupled with Brown’s leadership and determination made him the trophy-winning captain that he is today.

“I have had a couple of family issues as well and Peter has been there for me. He knows what it’s like to lose family member and was the first on the phone to me. They are the things I will remember Peter about, those small things that nobody else knew.”

“He picks up the phone in hard times, he chats you through it, he gives you time off if you need it or he is willing to meet you at Celtic Park or Lennoxtown, whatever is easiest for you. He was there when I first came to the club, him, Gordon Strachan and Tommy Burns, so I have a lot to thank Peter for personally. It is just sad to see Peter leaving, but the trophies and the memories I will have are all down to him.”

This sums up the integrity of the Celtic family; those who are struggling do not have to worry about being left down. Lawwell’s personal touch to Brown helped him through an incredibly tough period for everyone, and Brown went from strength-to-strength to become one of the most successful captains the club has ever seen. It cost him nothing, but it has helped Brown forever – something he won’t forget.
