Bye-Bye Albian Ajeti, Bye-Bye £4.5million – that’s Celtic’s transfer loss

So as reported earlier on The Celtic Star earlier today , Albian Ajeti is on the brink of sealing a move to Turkish side Gaziantep after a torrid three year spell in Glasgow.

Ajeti was signed by Neil Lennon from West Ham for a sum of around £5million. The fee we are reportedly receiving for him is ten times less than what we paid so that sums up what a disappointing signing he was. To make it more depressing, we apparently cooled interest in bringing Ivan Toney to the club in order to sign him.

Big things were expected from Albian despite a less than flattering time in East London. He was a Swiss international and had experience of playing and scoring in the Champions league. Tellingly though West Ham manager would not sanction a loan move with an option to buy and insisted on a straight transfer deal. Truth be told Moyes was desperate to get Ajeti out the door, a position that Brendan Rodgers understands only too well at the moment.

In the end Albian Ajeti is merely another flop signing by Celtic. He Scored just nine goals in 47 appearances for Celtic, and then fared just as badly during a loan spell in Austria with Sturm Graz, who were not interested in taking him off Celtic’s hands when that loan move came to an end.

Ajeti contributed next to nothing and between his transfer fee and wages was a very expensive mistake, alongside ‘eye for a player’ Neil Lennon’s other flop signings Vasilis Barkas and Ismaila Soro. That’s around £12million in losses right there on those three.

Barkas is already gone and Soro and Ajeti now looking like joining him, their salaries can put to much better use.

  1. Your continued negative attacks on our club legend, Neil Lennon is embarrassing for you.
Lennon was not single handedly responsible for bringing any player to the club! Are you really that ignorant?
Neil Lennon stands alone as a club legend who won trebles as a player, coach, and manager at our great club.
You on the other hand appear to stand alone as an uneducated clown who doesn’t do his homework before writing columns full of garbage!

  2. Ajeti looks like someone who’s made his money and is just going through the motions now!

Soro had promise but was too reckless.

*Are yourselves & Yardbarker partner sites? … identical headlines for this story, theirs released a few minutes later

    • Were such ‘observations’ to feature on a Sevco-type site, then they would not be entirely unexpected. To hark on about how much has been ‘lost’ is either plain daft or cynical or both. Of course there are ‘losses’: it’s a business, after all, albeit one very close to our green hearts. However, let’s focus on what’s been won, and what we aim to win in future. The place for misplaced, subjective negativity is somewhere else, and definitely not on a genuinely Celtic-minded site.

  3. That was a panic buy and i hope we have learned from that expierence the talk now is we have to buy 4or5 players now do we really need that to win the spl or is it not to get embarrassed in champions league like sevco who for some reason have an unbeatable team according to our scottish media papers and tv radio pundets ex celtic players are doubting Rodgers same ones who were dismissing angi embarrassing they really dont know much more than the supporter that goes to football every week kilmarnock game well its a matrress of a pitch ref and var should answer for their decision Celtic late penalty most people that seen it says it was a penalty not only that a stone waller we like to know what they seen that they dismissed the claim has any team played well at rugby pit Celtic get beat and are the worst team in the league st johstone park the bus at Celtic park Celtic created load of chances three sitters if taken we would have scored more we got a rookie ref st jonhstone time waisting theres a new law in yes he booked one player for timewaisting 2mins to go a token jester booked McGregor who gets special treatmeant blocked held no help from ref if player gets booked stops all this so called man to man marking McGregor got book yes but going by the fouls that went against him harsh ref nearly ripped his pocket off pulling card out as if this is what he has been dreaming of booking a Celtic captain A point extra in the referee sweepstake so dont panic buy have these players draining our money by seing out there contracts Celtic offered them to appeas the supporters Celtic will win at ipox nothing changed they have to win to go top as our so called media kept saying last season there more Glasgow derbies to pull points back we are going there with no support might be a good thing they way they acted the last two weeks maybe we are spoilt we need and will strenghthen left side so please keep the faith go by your own feelings not overpaid pundits looks like suttons signed the sky party contract no tims here

  4. I totally support this article. Fans who demand no criticism were around in the 90s too when we nearly died like Rangers. This article sums Lennon up for me as a manager, he did well as cover when Rodgers left but was never a permanent choice.

    • Many of us remember not just the 90s, Sarah, but decades before that as well. Your basic message is that we must learn from past mistakes, and of course that’s entirely correct. The article’s fundamental weakness, though, is a failure to provide constructive criticism – and such a simplistic approach requires neither awareness nor vision. So-called ‘fans’ of teams other than Celtic are adept at providing negative, destructive comments on our club. With that in mind, let’s just leave them to it, and we’ll look forward to this season, and beyond; and, yes, learning from our very rich, unique history.

  5. Patrick Cullen on

this happens every season ,panic buys then the manager gets the blame ,the men who hold the purse strings should be asking the FOOTBALL MANAGER who he wants to sign or TERMIDO AGAIN , open your eyes LAWELLS ECT

  6. Lenny had not a bad eye for a player when he signed Virgil van dyke, victor wamyana and Fraser forster who made club a fortune in transfer and sell on bonuses. Its easy to attack him because we never got 10 in a row but he gave us better European results than present and past manager put together. Neil Lennon real Celtic legend.
