Former Celtic defender Carl Starfelt has opened up on his Celta Vigo future. The Swedish defender has been linked with an exit just a year after his Paradise departure. Rafa Benitez signed the player but has since been replaced by Claudio Giraldez.

Speaking to Fotbollskanalen, Starfelt said that he’s going to keep working hard despite rumours that he’s not in the new manager’s plans next year.

“I was benched for three games near the end of the season. I think I showed in training that I was going to play. I didn’t give up or hang up. Then I got the chance and did well. I don’t give up.”

The 29-year-old was excellent after arriving from Rubin Kazan in the summer of 2021, forming a formidable defensive pairing with Cameron Carter-Vickers. The pair were unbeaten together in Scottish football, an excellent stat that is indicative of the quality between the USA and Swedish Internationalist. Celtic fans largely appreciated the defender’s efforts but this will have been universally given the struggles at the back when CCV was out the team.

Starfelt made 87 appearances for Celtic since arriving from Russia. In that time, he has scored three times and assisted twice.

Given that Brendan looks to be adding another centre back to partner CCV this summer, the manager could look at a reunion bid for the Swede.
