Celtic captain wants Real Madrid showdown in Champions League

Celtic skipper Callum McGregor has selected Real Madrid as his dream Champions League opposition. The 29-year-old started in this evening’s 4-2 win over FC Banik Ostrava in the Czech Republic.

Speaking to Celtic TV, McGregor said that he would like to play at the Bernabeu against the reigning European Champions.

“I have played at some pretty big ones but the one I have not played yet is Madrid and I think everyone will probably join me in saying that they want them in the group. Whoever we get we know it’s a big competition and it will be a big test so we have to be ready.”

Carlo Ancelotti’s side beat Liverpool in Paris courtesy of a Vinicius Jnr goal. Celtic have only faced Real Madrid in one competitive tie, recording a memorable win in 1980 before their lead was overturned in the Spanish capital.

Celtic go into the group stages of Europe’s top competition after the Premiership triumph in May. Ange Postecoglou’s side will look to make their mark in the competition. Whilst the captain may look to play Real Madrid, the supporters would like a group that is mixed between Europe’s biggest teams and fixtures that can see Celtic collect points to progress.

The Scottish Champions return to Paradise on Saturday against Blackburn Rovers at lunchtime. The league campaign kicks off against Aberdeen on the 31st.
