A comeback win against Falkirk on a wintry day, complete with orange ball!…

Over the weekend we had many games called off due to the wintery conditions, but back in the day it took more monstrous conditions than a drop of snow to stop ‘the fitbaw’ going ahead. One such game took place back in November 1992 as Celtic took on Falkirk at Celtic Park in a league clash.

The early nineties were a dire time to be a Celtic supporter, but those of us who were dedicated still headed to the game to cheer on the Hoops, whatever the weather.

The near 16,000 hardy souls who attended that match were treated to a strange but entertaining game to say the least. Celtic found ourselves 2-0 down after only 15 minutes as the bitter cold took effect and the snow started to fall heavily.

Big Tony Mowbray gave us some hope in the 18th minute as he pulled a goal back, but the snow started to fall more heavily covering the pitch making playing conditions, particularly visibility, very challenging. An orange ball was introduced just before the half hour mark much to the amusement of the crowd who mockingly booed its appearance.

But its appearance turned out to be a good luck charm as Gerry Creaney soon equalised for Celtic. The snow didn’t let up but that didn’t deter the Celtic players who continuously bombarded the Falkirk goal the entire second half in search of a winner, but to no avail.

Then when it looked like ending in a share of the spoils, Brian O’Neil headed home a winner with just four minutes on the clock to send the supporters who braved the elements home happy as they witnessed yet another dramatic comeback against Falkirk.

The one a few months before of course being the dramatic 5-4 victory at Brockville after being 4-2 down and with ten men. Dire days indeed, but sometimes entertaining.

Just an Ordinary Bhoy
