Celtic complete double signing of Danish twins Signe and Mathilde Carstens

It was two out and two in at Celtic FC Women today with Celtic’s Chinese stars Shen Mengyu and Shen Menglu both leaving the club and the arrival of Danish twins Signe and Mathilde Carstens as Elena Sadiku once again dipped into her extensive contacts to secure what looks like a brilliant double signing.

The 22 year-old twin sisters have both signed two year contracts at Celtic as the club moves away from the previous norm of 12 months deals with many new arrivals.

Both players arrive at Celtic from Danish side Fortuna Hjørring. Celtic describe Mathilde’s playing attributes as direct and technical skill in attacking areas, whilst Signe adds more options to the centre of the pitch for the Ghirls. So that looks like a number 10 and a six.

Both Carstens sisters are products of Fortuna Hjørring’s Academy system and both players arrive with experience on the domestic and international fronts.

Alongside playing for the first-team on a number of occasions domestically, they have also featured in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, including the Danish side’s last 16 tie against Barcelona in 2021.

Elena Sadiku, knows both players well from her time at Fortuna, was clearly delighted with the double signing: “I’m so happy that Mathilde and Signe chose to join Celtic. It truly shows that players abroad believe in our vision and what we want to achieve in the upcoming seasons.”

On the two players Elena gave this insight: “Signe is a great player with exceptional in-game understanding and technical ability on the ball, while Mathilde, with her outstanding dribbling ability, will enhance our game with both assists and goals.”

Both new signings have also played alongside goalkeeper, Kelsey Daugherty and more recently, both Signe and Mathilde also received call-ups for the Danish Under-23 squad, back in February, adding to their international experience at youth level.

Welcome to Celtic Signe and Mathilde!
