Celtic complete late signing of Luke McCowan in £1m deal

Celtic have completed the signing of Luke McCowan from Dundee. The 26-year-old arrives on a three-year deal after the clubs agreed a £1m deal in the final hour of the transfer window. The deal is likely a dream come true for McCowan, who grew up supporting Celtic.

Celtic had registered an interest in the player weeks ago but it was not until today that a formal bid was lodged. The versatile midfielder was subject to a number of bids from Hibs but Dundee refused to budge. Once Celtic came to the table, there was likely only one winner.

Coming through the ranks with Ayr United, McCowan moved to the City of Discovery in 2021, becoming a first team player. It was, however, under the tutelage of Tony Docherty that McCowan really took his game to the next level. In 49 appearances under Docherty, McCowan scored 13 goals and assisted 11 times.

Ahead of Matt O’Riley’s transfer to Brighton, Brendan spoke about wanting two midfielders in the door and with Arne Engels, McCowan completes the new arrivals.

McCowan is Celtic’s final acquisition of the window, following Arne Engels, Auston Trusty, Alex Valle, Adam Idah, Paulo Bernardo, Kasper Schmeichel and Vini Sinisalo. The arrival of McCowan bolsters Celtic’s homegrown quota for the UEFA Champions League.

Welcome to Celtic, Luke.

  1. Now, let’s sit back and wait for the negative bandwagonners to find something, no, ANYTHING, to complain about with the number of quality signings, the amount of money spent, or just anything they can think of, or anything other people can think of for them if they themselves are incapable.
Well done Celtic. Well done board. The board who have just OFFICIALLY been listed as the one doing the best job in Britain at running their club!
Spending over £30M in a single transfer window, picking up top quality players, players who not only have a pulse, (as the case with other clubs), are deemed to be a good fit into our system, while also offloading some deadwood, indicates some excellent management.
    HAIL HAIL

  2. Not convinced that Rodgers really wanted McCowan, yet thought it was an obvious choice of player that was required imo?
Happy enough that we finally got the deal completed, even if the time factor was ridiculous for a deal that was always in the making?
Don’t think Rodgers tackled this homegrown quota requirements to great within this window imo?
With Calmac and forrest not getting any younger, this homegrown quota is still an issue we look to be struggling with on the bigger picture?
Hope McCowan turns out to be a successful signing for ourselves, especially as we still require more Scottish players within our squad for the future?

    • Of course BR wanted him, stop talkin such pish, man, seriously!
You’re barely coherent at the best o times!

    • JOHNNO fortunately it doesn’t matter whether you (or any of us) are convinced about any aspect of first team management at the club but thanks for letting us all know.

General consensus seems to be that it turned out to be a pretty decent transfer window compared to previous cack-handed attempts.

McCowan, Bernardo and Engels also provide cover for next season when Hatate will probably leave, so that looks like good succession planning, as does Sinisalo for Schmeichel.

  3. I think McCowan is a really good signing. Has proven to be a top operator in the league, and fingers crossed improves even more at Celtic Park.
Was a bit disappointed to see Iwata go as I always felt he was a tidy and competent squad player and able deputy for the CDM slot, but with Engels coming in that’s obviously made his place redundant.
Will be great to see how Engels blends in with Calmac and Hatate who’ve already had great starts to the season.
