Celtic confirm record £11m signing of Arne Engels

Celtic have confirmed the signing of Arne Engels from Augsburg. The 20-year-old becomes Celtic’s record signing after completing an £11m move from the Bundesliga.

Engels emerged as Celtic’s primary target to replace Matt O’Riley, who completed a £30m move to Brighton earlier in the week, and Celtic made a number of bids before a deal was done.

The highly rated midfielder arrives on a four year deal in an exciting move by the club to secure a bright talent. There is no doubt that the player is highly rated and is earmarked as being one of the next players to develop at the club.

Brendan wanted the club to bring quality in over quantity and the club have responded, paying a record fee for Engels as well as putting decent money into deals for Auston Trusty and Adam Idah. The cash situation is encouraging as the club have sold players like Oh, Mikey Johnston and Bosun Lawal for a combined £9m with other players departing.

It is also a fairly monumental day for Engels as he was included in the Belgian National Team squad for the first time ahead of the forthcoming International break.
