Kieran Tierney is being backed to move to Newcastle United by Andy Walker. The ex-Celtic striker turned Sky Sports pundit reckons that the Magpies will secure the 25-year-old Scotland international left-back’s signature this summer.
Arsenal beat Everton last night to remain on track for Premier League glory. However, former Celtic favourite Tierney was again named on the bench behind Mikel Arteta’s trusted lieutenant Zinchenko.
Speaking to Go Radio Football Show, Walker backed the rumoured move. “I could see him going to Newcastle. He would undoubtedly be first choice there, they have a lot of ambition, they seem to be a club now that are focused on getting European football or maybe even Champions League football, which Tierney has been used to.
“He certainly won’t be happy playing second-fiddle at Arsenal, although I’m such. Big admirer of Zinchenko. He is a wonderful talent, and when you consider all the stuff the has to put up with off the pitch back in his homeland, he is magnificent to watch.”
Newcastle have been credited as real contenders to sign Kieran Tierney as Eddie Howe continues his revamping of the squad since a Saudi investment fund took over from Mike Ashley in 2021.
Howe took Newcastle to Wembley for the League Cup Final, where they were beaten by Manchester United. However, the trip will only serve to whet the appetite of the Geordies who suffered for so long under Ashley’s laissez-faire regime.
A move to St James’ Park would certainly benefit Celtic, given the sizeable sell-on.
Given his excellent record with Celtic, Tierney will fancy the ambition of Newcastle, especially given that their style of play encourages strong full-back play. It is certainly one to watch but hopefully The Gunners can seal the title as if they do, Celtic will be due an additional add-on payment from Arsenal as part of the £25m transfer from Celtic in August 2018.
And Newcastle will be much closer to home – and Celtic Park – for KT.
