On this day in 2015 Inter Milan were the visitors to Celtic Park in what turned out to be a hugely entertaining match which ended as square with each side scoring 3 goals each. Ronny Deila had negotiated his way through the group stages of the UEFA Cup was rewarded with this glamour tie in the round of 32.
This was the first competitive meeting with Inter since the Italian giants won that penalty shoot-out in 1972.
It looked like being a much more straight-forward occasion for the visitors in 2015 with Inter racing into an early two goal lead with Shari opening the scoring on 4 minutes and Palacio doubling the advantage with 13 minutes on the clock.
Celtic fought back though, roared on by the capacity crowd of 60,000 and Stuart Armstrong’s goal on 24 minutes, incredibly was followed by an equaliser seconds later, and this went down as an own goal from Campagnaro.
Frustratingly Celtic fell behind just before the interval when Palacio got his second of the evening after an horrible error from Craig Gordon.
The second half was looking like it was going to be goalless, despite Celtic’s determined play that had Inter sitting in happy to defend their lead. And it looked like being a case of job done for Inter right up until the last few seconds when on-loan striker John Guidetti, with 93 minutes on the clock, had his finest moment in a Celtic shirt and nearly took the roof of Celtic Park!
Incredibly Inter nearly won to from the kick-off but a fine save from the Celtic goalkeeper atoned for his earlier error. What a night that was under the lights at Celtic Park!
“When you stand behind your team when it’s 2-0 down it means so much to us and it’s what the club is about – the supporters,” Ronny said afterwards.
Here are the highlights from an incredible game at Celtic Park that finished Celtic 3 Inter Milan 3.
