Celtic have signed a number of young talents from the English leagues in recent seasons. Having brought the likes of Lee O’Connor and Luca Connell to the club a few years ago, the Bhoys swooped for Sheffield Wednesday duo Liam Shaw and Osaze Urhoghide last summer.
The latter pair joined Celtic for modest compensation fees, following the end of their contracts. Both were given four year deals but have struggled for game time this term. Indeed, they had to wait until the Europa League win over Real Betis in December for their debuts, while Shaw then made one further (substitute) appearance in the 0-0 draw against St Mirren a couple of weeks ago.
According to Scottish football journalist Derek McGregor, Ange Postecoglou is now weighing up offers for Shaw and Urhoghide to depart the club on a loan basis during this January transfer window.
In addition to that potential English double departure, McGregor also claims that young Celtic midfielder Ewan Henderson has been told that he is surplus to requirements. The 21-year-old was named Man of the Match in Brendan Rodgers’ last game in charge of the club, before being denied many opportunities under Neil Lennon. When called upon, he has rarely failed to impress, and a was a standout performer in the unexpected victory over Lille in the Europa League last term – playing in an unfamiliar wide position to boot.
Henderson dropped out of the frame at the club after that game, and had to wait until this season’s home clash against Real Betis to get another chance. Coming on as a substitute, he scored the winning goal against the Spanish giants.
Remarkably, Henderson has never been on the losing side in a Celtic shirt. That record covers his 12 appearances in the Premiership, Scottish Cup, Champions League and Europa League. It is curious as to why he has not been favoured by any manager as he has never failed to perform in the limited games that he has played.
The Scottish midfielder has reportedly been told he can leave when his contract expires in the summer and he may look to Italy, where his brother Liam has flourished since being released by Celtic a few years ago.
