Celtic goalkeeping target exits Euros despite strong showing

Celtic goalkeeping target Martin Dubravka was left heartbroken as England won their Euro 2024 Round of 16 tie in Extra Time. The 35-year-old goalie has impressed as Slovakia have defied expectations to reach the knockouts.

After Jude Bellingham netted in the 95th minute with a bicycle kick, Harry Kane then scored in the first minute to send Gareth Southgate’s side through to the Quarter Finals. It was a result that means Dubravka will now go home to find himself a new club.

Newcastle are willing to move the veteran stopper on as they look to sign James Trafford to compete with Nick Pope for the No.1 jersey. Dubravka made 30 appearances last season but it was clear this summer that Eddie Howe was targeting a second goalkeeper with Dubravka able to move on given that he has one year remaining in his deal.

The draw of the Champions League will likely appeal to Dubravka as well as competing for trophies. Although, now he’s heading back it’s expected that there will be an update if it is Dubravka that is to replace Joe Hart.

Celtic will likely have a list of potential candidates to replace Hart. However, Dubravka would probably satisfy the remit of being available but would not be a long term solution given his age.
