Celtic today play against Wolves at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. The Hoops have of course played in the Emerald Isle on more than one occasion in the past and one of those occasions was back in 1990 when Billy McNeill took his Celtic side to take on Dublin side Bohemians.
The match took place in Bohemians Dalymount Park to celebrate the club’s centenary and Celtic were given the honour of providing the opposition. Former Bohemians and Celtic player Peter Kavanagh was the guest of honour. Peter had the great honour of turning out for both clubs in the late 20s and early 30s as an outside left.
A crowd of Twenty thousand was said to be the official attendance, but it was more likely a few thousand more, as more supporters than expected crammed into the Dublin stadium due to Irish World Cup heroes Pat Bonner and Chris Morris starting for Celtic. Indeed extra security was brought in to deal with the massive crowd which descended on Dalymount Park.
More so for Pat Bonner who was of course one of Ireland’s biggest heroes for his shoot out heroics in the World Cup second round victory over Romania. The furore to welcome the World Cup heroes was so much that kick off had to be delayed for 10 minutes.
Celtic’s summer signings John Collins, Martin Hayes and Charlie Nicholas were all involved and it was the latter who stole the show with a well taken brace, his first goals since his return to the club.
Celtic finished victorious with a 2-0 victory, but to the home crowd it mattered not a jot as they celebrated their side’s centenary year while welcoming home their World Cup heroes.
The Celtic team was Bonner, Morris, P McLaughlin, Grant, Elliott, Whyte, Hayes (Miller), McStay, Nicholas (Hewitt), Walker, Collins.
