Celtic interested in Augsburg midfield wonderkid Arne Engels

Celtic have been linked with a move for Augsburg wonderkid Arne Engels, with Footballtransfers.com reporting that the 20 year-old midfielder is one of Celtic’s top targets this summer.

Journalist Ronan Murphy, in an exclusive report, states that he has been told that “Brendan Rodgers is also keen to add further strength to his midfield and has targeted dynamic Augsburg midfielder Engels as a key addition to the team.”

Posting on social media, Ronan Murphy adds this observation:

“Arne Engels would be a brilliant signing for Celtic. He’s been a revelation at Augsburg and already is one of their most important players at 20. They definitely should do everything they can to get him over the line.”

Brendan Rodgers is supposedly looking to bolster his midfield and may look to the Belgian 20-year-old for improvement.

The Scottish champions have already made one addition to their midfield this summer with the permanent arrival of Paulo Bernardo, but with many teams still interested in the likes of Matt O’Riley and Reo Hatate, some more midfield options couldn’t hurt.

And it’s no surprise that Engels has caught Rodgers’ eye. His side, Augsburg, finished 11th in the Bundesliga last season, but the midfielder impressed so much over the 50 games he played that the Belgium manager brought the promising player to train with the senior national team ahead of the Euros.

With 50 appearances in the league last season, he found the net three times and assisted nine. He has incredible versatility, being able to play as a defensive midfielder, an attacking midfielder, or even out on the wing.

He is currently valued at about €9m, although that may be optimistic, with Celtic likely to test the water at around half that price, as per usual.

In other news, the Millwall manager last night confirmed the capture of a promising Celtic player, with Celtic pushing for a quick exit rather than seeing Daniel Kelly sit the rest of the year out in cold storage at lennoxtown.  A fee of £500k plus a sell-on clause would be enough to let Kelly head to Millwall this summer.
