Celtic may need to break their transfer record to seal defender’s transfer this summer

The departures of Frimpong and Elhamed mean that Celtic will need to sign a couple of right backs in the summer.

Jonjoe Kenny has looked solid since his arrival on loan and it could even be a case of this being an audition for him ahead of a potential transfer in the summer.

He’s been at Everton for years without breaking through so a permanent exit should suit him, but as is usually the case with Premier League players, finances are going to be a major issue.

A report from HITC has indicated that Celtic may struggle to get the deal done, as both the transfer fee and his wages are on the high side.

The fee has to be the main stumbling block as it’s suggested that Everton wanted £10m to let him go in January, and even if he’s been good he hasn’t shown enough to be worthy of club record transfer fees just yet.

The potential wage is a more interesting one as it’s suggested that he’s on £15k per week so that should be affordable for Celtic, but it’s also suggested that they won’t pay him that much.

It’s not clear if it’s a case of not wanting to pay him that much or if they genuinely can’t, but if it’s the latter then that suggests an underwhelming summer lies ahead.

It may come down to other interest in him as it should be in Everton’s interests to sell him if they don’t plan to use him, but you fear other clubs down south will have no trouble doubling or even tripling that wage if they want him.
