The late, great Celtic Historian David Potter’s Celtic Diary each morning on The Celtic Star looks back at key Celtic events and matches on this day starting on 11th February 1928…
SATURDAY 11 FEBRUARY 1928 – You simply can’t keep that man Tommy McInally out of the news! Last week in a Cup tie in Keith, he scored a hat-trick and then disappeared mysteriously for a few days. Today however, having made his peace, he is back, and scores the only goal of the game, direct from a corner kick, for a toiling Celtic side against Clyde at Shawfield.
SATURDAY 11 FEBRUARY 1961 – Celtic make no mistake today at Parkhead as they beat a spirited but overawed Montrose side in the Scottish Cup. 26,000 see John Hughes, Steve Chalmers score two each, Alec Byrne scores one and the other is an own goal. The scorer of the own goal is a Celtic supporter, and tells everyone for years afterwards that he scored for Celtic.
SATURDAY 11 FEBRUARY 1984 – Celtic show welcome signs of returning to form with a 5-2 win over St Johnstone. The 9,439 crowd show how highly the Celtic support rate their chances of winning the championship following last week’s defeat at Aberdeen, but those who turn up see some good goals – two from Brain McClair, two from Murdo MacLeod and one from Frank McGarvey.
WEDNESDAY 11 FEBRUARY 1992 – Signs that Celtic are beginning to get over their bad patch at the beginning of the year are evident at Celtic Park as Gerry Creaney and Tommy Coyne score the two goals that put Dundee United out of the Scottish Cup. 26,225 are there and ripples of applause were frequently heard round the ground at some of the delightful passing that Liam Brady’s side are producing. BBC’s Ceefax describes the goals as the “Tom and Jerry Show”.

SUNDAY 11 FEBRUARY 2001 – Martin O’Neill’s side are in a rich vein of form these days, and have now beaten Rangers twice in the space of four days, Alan Thompson being the scorer of the only goal today as Celtic win 1-0 at Celtic Park. Fernando Ricksen is red carded for two yellows, and the victory is more comprehensive than the 1-0 score line would suggest.
