Celtic On This Day – 15th October – David Potter’s Celtic Diary

The late, great Celtic Historian David Potter’s Celtic diary highlights key Celtic-related events relevant to each day, today covering 15th October…

SATURDAY 15 OCTOBER 1921

Patsy Gallacher

Albion Rovers are in the First Division of the Scottish League (indeed in 1920 they reached the Scottish Cup final) but today they are well beaten 3-1 by Celtic at Parkhead with goals from Patsy Gallacher, Tommy McInally and Johnny Gilchrist. Patsy Gallacher is described by The Sunday Post as “out on his own”.

SATURDAY 15 OCTOBER 1938

Chick Geatons

More or less continuing where they left off last year when they won the Scottish League and the Empire Exhibition Trophy, Celtic beat Clyde 3-0 at Hampden before 43,796 spectators to win the Glasgow Cup. Jimmy Delaney is superb, as always, and scores a goal, the other two coming from Chick Geatons and Johnny Crum.

SATURDAY 15 OCTOBER 1966

Celtic’s unbeaten run continues with a 3-0 win over Airdrie at Celtic Park with two goals from Bobby Lennox and one from Joe McBride. Before the football highlights on Saturday night on BBC is an American TV soap opera involving a lawyer called Perry Mason who always wins his case. People are now beginning to ask “Who is going to lose first? Celtic or Perry Mason?”

SATURDAY 15 OCTOBER 1977

Frank Munro

Celtic’s woes continue as we ask what we have done to upset the gods of football. Frank Munro has been secured in midweek from Wolves on a month’s loan. Frank, from Dundee and Celtic-daft, would have given anything to play for Celtic a decade ago, but now seems too old and too slow. For the game against St.Mirren, he is immediately made captain – a surprising move which leads a few supporters to question the judgement of Jock Stein in the wake of the Dalglish transfer – and he opens the scoring…with an own goal! Although Tom McAdam scores for Celtic, the game finishes 2-1 for St.Mirren (with a goal scored by future Celtic star Billy Stark). 29,000 watch in horror. Oh, the folly of selling Dalglish without taking steps to find an adequate replacement!

SATURDAY 15 OCTOBER 2011

A remarkable day at Rugby Park, Kilmarnock as Celtic are 0-3 down at half-time and Neil Lennon’s tenure of the manager’s job seems tenuous, but then Celtic fight back with two goals from Anthony Stokes and one from Charlie Mulgrew to earn a 3-3 draw and might even have won. As significant as anything that day is the last-minute equaliser that St Mirren score against Rangers at Ibrox.
