Celtic On This Day – 16th September – David Potter’s Celtic Diary

Month 2, Day 16 of Celtic Historian David Potter’s new diary on The Celtic Star which will run throughout the new season and will highlight key Celtic-related events relevant to each day, today covering 16 September…

SATURDAY 16 SEPTEMBER 1905

Celtic are very impressive as they beat Falkirk 5-0 at Brockville before a large crowd inside the tight little ground. Jimmy Quinn scores two, Alec Bennett scores two and Willie Loney one in a fine display of attacking football.

SATURDAY 16 SEPTEMBER 1961

Celtic, the better team, are unlucky not to win this Scottish League game at Ibrox which ended in a 2-2 draw. One down in the early stages, they come back with goals from John Divers and Willie Fernie only for Jim Baxter to score with a late equaliser from long range. The game is marred by the death of two Rangers supporters and injuries to many more when a crush barrier collapsed at the end of the game.

SATURDAY 16 SEPTEMBER 1972

Lou Macari scores against Rangers

In a game played at Hampden because of ground reconstruction at Celtic Park and with a 12.00 noon kick-off as an anti-hooligan measure, Celtic stroll to an easy 3-1 victory over Rangers with goals from Kenny Dalglish, Jimmy Johnstone and Lou Macari. John Greig scores a last-minute consolation goal and as the Rangers supporters in the 50,416 crowd have long since departed, Celtic fans give him an ironic cheer! And John waves back!

WEDNESDAY 16 SEPTEMBER 1981

Celtic enjoy a good result against the mighty Juventus in the first leg of the first round of the European Cup at Parkhead. Murdo MacLeod scores the only goal of the game, but the 60,017 crowd remain convinced that the score could have been a lot more but for the referee’s strange reluctance to award penalties.

SATURDAY 16 SEPTEMBER 2006

Stephen McManus’s headed goal is enough to win the game 1-0 for Celtic against a stubborn and well-organised Dunfermline defence in front of 55,000 at Celtic Park today. Celtic really should have won by more, but striker Kenny Miller continues to have bad luck in front of goal.
