Celtic On This Day – 23rd May – David Potter’s Celtic Diary

Celtic Historian David Potter each morning on The Celtic Star looks back at key Celtic events and matches on this day 23rd May 1903. David’s latest bestseller The Celtic Rising ~ 1965: The Year Jock Stein Changed Everything is available now in print on Celtic Star Books.

Alec Bennett scored a hat-trick

SATURDAY 23rd MAY 1903 – Maley’s new signings, Alec Bennett and James Young impress the 15,000 crowd at Ibrox as Celtic beat St.Mirren 5-2 to win the Glasgow Charity Cup and to hint at great things to come after a few barren seasons. Alec Bennett scores a hat-trick, Willie Loney and Jimmy Quinn one each as Celtic seem to be playing with a lot more commitment, passion and as the newspapers of the time put it, “dash”. The beautiful summer weather is in tune with such a fine Celtic display.

SUNDAY 23rd MAY 1999 – Last game of the season and Burchill gave Jozef Venglos  a selection headache for the Cup Final scoring by both the Celtic goals. Memorable really for Sieb Dykstra, the Dundee Utd. goalkeeper’s last game in Scotland and the good hearted banter between the Bhoys and him.
