The late, great Celtic Historian David Potter’s Celtic diary highlights key Celtic related events relevant to each day, today covering 24 August…
WEDNESDAY 24 AUGUST 1921
Celtic make it three wins out of three with a good, hard-fought away win over Airdrieonians at Broomfield. The crowd is given as 15,000 and Celtic’s goals in the 2-0 victory are scored by Patsy Gallacher and Adam McLean (see below).

SATURDAY 24 AUGUST 1935
The death is announced of Tom Maley, a member of Celtic’s first ever team and of course the brother of manager Willie Maley. Celtic’s game against St Johnstone at Muirton Park goes ahead but Celtic wear black arm bands. Willie Maley does not travel but appears at Buchanan Street Station to see the team off and to tell them to “pull out something special for Tom today”. They do just that, winning 3-2 with two goals from Jimmy McGrory and one from Jimmy Delaney.
SATURDAY 24 AUGUST 1963
Everyone except for Chairman Bob Kelly seems to realise that Celtic are in deep trouble. Today in sweltering weather at Ibrox, Celtic lose yet again 0-3 to Rangers, the same score as two weeks ago and indeed the Scottish Cup final in May. There is trouble on the terracings, and last week there could have been a lot worse outside Celtic Park, but Mr Kelly seems impervious to it all. The arrogance of the man is quite breath taking.
WEDNESDAY 24 AUGUST 1983
It is a long time since Celtic visited Glebe Park, Brechin but they do so tonight in the Scottish League Cup, beating the spirited local side 1-0 thanks to a goal from Jim Melrose. New Manager Davie Hay is so far doing well enough, but the loss of Billy McNeill as well as Charlie Nicholas has not gone down well with the unhappy supporters.
SATURDAY 24 AUGUST 2002
Henrik Larsson scores the only goal of the game with his chest today as Celtic beat a hard-working and determined Partick Thistle side 1-0 at Firhill. Celtic are wearing a not unattractive strip of white jerseys and green pants. Although we would all prefer the hoops, nevertheless this strip is more attractive than some of the grizzly horrors we have seen.
