The late, great Celtic Historian David Potter’s Celtic diary highlights key Celtic related events relevant to each day, today covering 25 August…
SATURDAY 25 AUGUST 1906
There are clear signs that a really great Celtic team is developing as they defeat Kilmarnock 5-0 before 18,000 at home today. Jimmy Quinn scores a hat-trick, and Bobby Templeton and Willie Orr (with a penalty) the others. It is Bobby Templeton’s debut and he is very impressive, as is the on-loan goalkeeper from Rangers, Tommy Sinclair. The Scottish Referee comments that he cannot get a game for Rangers because of Sandy Newbigging, but he looked quite at home in his “new biggin” at Celtic Park.
SATURDAY 25 AUGUST 1928
So who needs Tommy McInally? Tom is now with Sunderland, but today Willie Gray (Wuggy) scores twice at Somerset Park as Celtic beat Ayr United 2-0, making it three wins out of three.
SATURDAY 25 AUGUST 1962
Celtic appal their large travelling support by going three goals down to Hearts at Tynecastle before John Hughes and Bobby Murdoch bring some respectability to the score line and make it 3-2. But it is still a poor result which imperils Celtic’s chances of qualification from the League Cup section. Two of Hearts’ goals were scored by Willie Wallace.
WEDNESDAY 25 AUGUST 1965
No-one realises it at the time but this is in fact the start of nine-in-a-row League championships as Celtic in the first Scottish League game of the season turn it on and defeat Dundee United 4-0 at Tannadice with goals from John Divers, Joe McBride, Tommy Gemmell and Ian Young (with a penalty kick). Orjan Persson of Dundee United (who will in later years play for Rangers) is sent off. The crowd is given as 18,000.
SATURDAY 25 AUGUST 2001
Celtic complete a good week (they qualified for the Champions League in midweek by getting the better of Ajax) by travelling to Easter Road and beating Hibs 4-1, with two goals coming from Chris Sutton and once each from Lubo Moravcik and Henrik Larsson.
