The late, great Celtic Historian David Potter’s Celtic diary highlights key Celtic related events relevant to each day, today covering 28 August…
SATURDAY 28 AUGUST 1926
No-one seems to have any sort of answer to Jimmy McGrory who hits four as Celtic beat Queen’s Park 6-1 at Hampden Park before a crowd of 17,000. The other two goals come from Paddy Connolly and Willie McStay, as Celtic seem to be taking up where they left off at the end of last season.
WEDNESDAY 28 AUGUST 1935
Jimmy McGrory scores a hat-trick in the 6-0 defeat of hapless Third Lanark at Celtic Park. He has now scored seven goals in four games this season. Willie Buchan scores two and Johnny Crum the other.
SATURDAY 28 AUGUST 1948
At their fourth attempt, Celtic at last record their first victory of the new season. This is at Tynecastle where before 40,000 fans, Celtic come from behind to record a narrow 2-1 victory. Both goals are scored by John McPhail, one from a penalty. The victory is greeted with great joy by the visiting fans who have not deserted their charges even in the face of some dreadful results.
.SUNDAY 28 AUGUST 2005
Celtic travel to East End Park, Dunfermline and win 4-0 with two goals from Maciej Zurawski and one each from John Hartson and Shunsuke Nakamura. Celtic were wearing a pleasing all lime green strip, and Zurawski and Nakamura’s goals were their first for the club.
