SATURDAY 2 AUGUST 1958

Celtic’s trial match kicks off tonight at the eccentric time of 7.00 pm. It will be between The Green and Whites v. The Whites. The Whites contain some promising youngsters like Billy McNeill, Pat Crerand and Bertie Auld.

SATURDAY 2 AUGUST 1969

An over-confident Celtic horrify their large travelling support by losing to Carlisle United 1-0 in a pre-season friendly at Burnden Park. Ex-Celt Willie O’Neill is playing for Carlisle. 15,000 Celtic fans travel to Carlisle with the Cumbrian police draft in 150 extra police for the occasion. 18 Celtic fans arrested on the M74 for trying to thumb lifts to Carlisle. Buses were told to drop fans at the Carlisle ground which was outside the centre to prevent excessive drinking in the town prior to the game.

TUESDAY 2 AUGUST 2005

Having appalled their fans by losing 0-5 to Artmedia Bratislava last week, Celtic almost pull it back by winning 4-0 at Celtic Park this week with goals from Alan Thompson, Craig Beattie, John Hartson and Steve McManus. 50,063 watch on and see at least some fight this week.

SUNDAY 2 AUGUST 2020

In a totally unreal atmosphere for the start of the season Celtic beat Hamilton 5-1 with a hat-trick from Odsonne Edouard, and one from Jeremy Frimpong and another from Patryk Klimala. There are no spectators at Celtic Park because of Covid 19, but SKY TV and Celtic TV cover the game.

About Author

David was a distinguished Celtic author and historian and writer for The Celtic Star. He lived in Kirkcaldy and followed Celtic all my life, having seen them first at Dundee in March 1958. He was a retired teacher and his other interests were cricket, drama and the poetry of Robert Burns. David Potter passed away on 29 July 2023 after a short illness. He was posthumously awarded a Special Recognition award by Celtic FC at the club's Player of the Year awards in May 2024. David's widow Rosemary accepted the award to huge applause from the Celtic Supporters in the Hydro.
