Celtic On This Day – 30th August – David Potter’s Celtic Diary

The late, great Celtic Historian David Potter’s Celtic diary highlights key Celtic related events relevant to each day, today covering 30 August…

SATURDAY 30 AUGUST 1902

13,000 are at Cathkin today to see Celtic beat Third Lanark 2-1 with goals from Tommy McDermott and Henry Marshall. General opinion was that Thirds were unlucky not to get a draw.

WEDNESDAY 30 AUGUST 1933

Celtic make progress in the Glasgow Cup tonight with a fine 4-1 win over Third Lanark at Cathkin Park. Young Johnny Crum scores twice, Charlie Napier once and Jimmy McGrory once.

WEDNESDAY 30 AUGUST 1961

A shameful night for Celtic at Perth. The performance of the team at Muirton Park when they lost 0-2 and were all but eliminated from the League Cup is bad enough, but the behaviour of the fans is absolutely shocking with fighting, bottle-throwing, window breaking and other acts of vandalism committed near the ground and at the railway station. Such behaviour is rightly condemned by the club, but they fail to see a connection between hooliganism and mediocre performances by the team on the field.

WEDNESDAY 30 AUGUST 1967

The famous night of “The Fugitive” – the last night of the long running serial on the television, but it was no more dramatic than the game at Parkhead which saw Rangers 1-0 up and awarded a penalty kick which was missed by Kai Johansen, then Celtic ran up and scored three goals from Willie Wallace, Bobby Murdoch and Bobby Lennox. Celtic thus qualified for the Scottish League Cup quarter finals.

SATURDAY 30 AUGUST 1969

It may be that Willie Ormond’s St. Johnstone are to be the new challengers to the Old Firm. Certainly 60,000 are at Parkhead to see a good game which ends 2-2, Celtic’s goals coming from Steve Chalmers and Harry Hood.
