ON THIS DAY, on the way to a Scottish Cup win that season, Celtic defeated little Elgin City at Celtic Park by 7 goals to nil. As the year was 1967 the highlanders could perhaps have left the East End of Glasgow thinking that they did well to keep the scoreline down, particularly as at one stage the rampant Celts scored three goals in two amazing minutes in this game, which attracted a crowd of 34,000.

Celtic inside-left Charlie Gallagher – ahead of making his international debut the following midweek for Ireland against Turkey – was given the honour of leading out the team.

Jock Stein had made two changes to the side that had hammered Ayr Utd by 5-0 at Somerset Park, with Cattenach in for Craig at right back and Lennox preferred to Wallace at inside right.

Chalmers got the first with a header from a Hughes cross. Lennox netted a second and then a third. The second half was all Celtic with Hughes scoring before Wallace on for the injured Bobby Murdoch, added two and Lennox completed his hat-trick.

The Celtic side was Simpson, Cattanach, Gemmell, Murdoch (Wallace), McNeill, Clark, Johnstone, Lennox, Chalmers, Gallacher, Hughes and the goal-scorers were
Chalmers (43), Lennox (44,45,70), Hughes (62), Wallace (83,89).

These were the best of times for the Celtic support.
