WILLIE WALLACE had given Celtic the lead just before half-time in the Scottish Cup tie with Dunfermline on Saturday 13 February but a goal from ex-Celt Joe McBride meant that the sides would have to do it all again at East End Park on this day in 1971.
Celtic made one change from the weekend with Jock Stein bringing Bobby Lennox into the side with fellow Lisbon Lion Bertie Auld dropping to the bench.
So the Celtic team was Williams, Hay, Gemmell, Connelly, McNeill, Brogan, Johnstone, Hood, Wallace, Callaghan and Lennox.
Celtic played much better that in the draw at Celtic Park 4 days previously and the 1-0 scoreline somewhat flatters the Pars. Celtic’s front four of Johnstone, Hood, Wallace and Lennox caused the home side all sorts of problems but only had a Harry Hood goal, scored after 19 minutes, to show for their efforts at the final whistle. Hood’s winner was a fine shot after great build up work between Lennox and Wallace, much to the delight of the huge travelling Celtic support in the crowd of 23,000.
