On a bitterly cold night under the lights at Celtic Park, the Scottish Champions put Hibernian to the sword, winning 4-1. However, Celtic were also able to pay tribute to Shane MacGowan, who tragically died last week.
MacGowan, who was the legendary frontman of The Pogues, died in Dublin aged 65. The singer was a big Celtic supporter and his connection with the club was recognised by the Celtic Park DJ, who took their opportunity to pay homage to MacGowan with two tracks.
Fairytale of New York was played at half-time, which at this time of year isn’t too surprising. Although, there was an added poignancy given the passing of MacGowan.

RIP Shane MacGowan – one of the great maverick lyricists.
Hopefully Fairytale of New York will be Christmas number one this year as a mark of respect to him. pic.twitter.com/Tor77IBIx2

Then, after John Beaton sounded the final whistle for full time, The Celtic Song as performed by MacGowan was played.

Celtic have used Fiesta by The Pogues as a goal song for a number of years but tonight’s inclusion of the two tracks were clearly a nod to the great man. May he rest in peace.
