Celtic reportedly considering 31-year-old attacker on free transfer

Celtic are being linked with a swoop for André Ayew, who is set to be released by Swansea after their defeat in the Championship Play-Off Final. The 31-year-old was Swansea’s record signing but ahead of a rebuild after the loss to Brentford, Ayew is being allowed to depart after he was unable to agree a new deal.

According to Ghana Soccernet, Celtic are interested in the Ghana captain as they look to mount a rebuild this summer following last season’s poor showing. Ange Postecoglou is expected to arrive as manager in the next few days and he will likely be keen to put his own stamp on the team. The Australian likes playing fast, attacking football and will be looking to sign a number of players with strikers at the top of his list.

With Odsonne Edouard set to depart for Leicester City, Patryk Klimala already having left for New York Red Bulls and Leigh Griffiths’ future remaining in the balance, Celtic need to bulk up their attacking options. Ayew scored 17 goals and assisted 4 times across 47 appearances last season and he may be the ideal stop-gap as the club look to rebuild after a disastrous last season.

His wages are likely to be a stumbling block having been earning an eye-watering £75k with The Swans. At 31, Ayew likely sees another decent contract in the pipeline and as a result, Celtic should not be offering ridiculous wages to anyone. The summer rebuild needs to be shrewd pieces of business as opposed to expensive flops like Duffy, Laxalt etc.

  1. Red Scotland on

The player is likely tidy enough to be a success up here but we already have a prolific player of that age in Leigh Griffiths. I think we should be looking to sign a player with more years in front of him than behind him. The club owe the fans a lot this season. Our title must return, and with it one of the domestic cups. Europe must also be taken on effectively so we need to stump up the cash for some real quality and the rest will take care of itself.
