ON THIS DAY in 1967, Celtic secured the league title after a draw at Ibrox. Thanks to the Celtic Wiki and LilZe85 on Twitter, we can relive the result as there is not much football on the horizon at the moment.

RANGERS 2 CELTIC 2

Jock Stein’s side travelled to Ibrox knowing that a point would secure a domestic Treble. While Inter Milan’s scouts watched on, a rain sodden pitch met the two teams and it was a difficult environment for football. Needing just a draw, Celtic were expected to deploy defensive tactics; however, Stein’s side attacked confidently, even if they were unlucky to concede first.

Jardine put Rangers ahead on 41 minutes before Jimmy Johnstone returned by knocking in a rebound from a Bobby Lennox shot just a minute later.

Johnstone made it 2-1 with a truly remarkable effort from 30 yards out. Cutting in from the left hand side, evading numerous defenders before drilling a left footed shot into the top corner of the net.

This goal and the inevitability of Celtic winning the league title resulted in the game being delayed whilst some sections of the Ibrox support revolted. The game was eventually restarted and Rangers responded seven minutes later, saving themselves some face by earning a draw.

78,000 crammed into Ibrox on the afternoon; however, it was less than expected as a result of the adverse weather conditions. Regardless of this, the loyal Celtic supporters celebrated wildly having won the league at the home of their bitter rivals.
