Our current transfer record stands at £9 million. That was the fee that enticed Odsonne Edouard to Celtic from PSG in 2018.

We haven’t even got close to equalling that since despite posting record profits with a healthy amount of cash reserves in the bank. Will we ever splash the cash that sees us break that record? It’s very doubtful with the ultra cautious mob currently running our club.

But we can only hope for change, and if that happens this summer hopefully we will part with some serious cash that sees us break our current transfer record. Naturally folk will want that sort of cash spent on a game changer. like a prolific scorer, just like Edouard was, or a creative playmaker, someone who can get bums off seats, like Lubo.

But the area that I would like to see get some serious cash thrown at it is in defence, mainly the centre back position. Yes we have CCV, but that’s it. Liam Scales is a squad player at best, as is Stephen Welsh. Gustaf Lagerbielke clearly doesn’t have a future at the club, and Maik Nawrocki while having great potential seems to made of glass.

If we were to invest in a top quality centre back to play alongside CCV it would make us more strong and compact at the back, especially on the European front. We’ve got to become harder to beat.

You’ve seen this season how important it is to have a solid backline. We’ve struggled in CCV’s absence which has been more than a few occasions this season. You only have to look at how more confident and fluent we are with Celtic’s Big Strong Man steadying the ship at the back this campaign. He makes the entire side tick. From the midfield to the strikers we seem to be more compact with a reliable and quality presence at the back.

We still need a midfielder with some presence, a quality striker and a left back, but spending most of our budget on a quality centre back would benefit us more greatly. Just think how good we’d be with a defender of similar quality of CCV at the back.

They do say good sides are built from the back after all. We are going to sign a new goalkeeper, let’s give him as much protection in front of him and make Celtic harder to beat.
