Celtic spoke to multiple candidates but only wanted Brendan

Celtic spoke to a number of candidates during their pursuit of a replacement for Ange Postecoglou but there was only one man that they wanted. Following Postecoglou’s departure for Tottenham Hotspur at the beginning of the month, Celtic were already considering their options.

According to The Daily Mail, the club spoke to Kieran McKenna of Ipswich Town, the unattached Daniel Farke, Pep’s assistant at City Enzo Maresca and highly rated Italian Francesco Farioli.

However, it appears that their first target was a return to Celtic Park for Brendan Rodgers. The Irishman enjoyed a two-and-a-half year spell at Celtic between 2016 and 2019 before leaving for Leicester City.

After four years, two 5th placed finishes, a first FA Cup and Community Shield win, Rodgers departed due to the club’s dismal run following a lack of investment in the squad.

The announcement is imminent with Rodgers set to be confirmed as the club’s new manager. It is an excellent appointment, even if some fans are holding a grudge regarding the manner that he left in last time.

That chap in Paisley, if he’s still out and about, will get at least one of his wishes. Brendan Rodgers will be back. The acquisition of cans is up to him.

I’m sure Mr Desmond has noticed that.

I wish I could get excited about him coming back but i can’t.
Not many times in our history has second time around signings whether it was a player or a manager has it been long term success. Big Billy in the centenary season yes but Lenny ended up in disaster and one wonders in Mr Desmond’s other lines of his empire would people who walked out on him before be welcomed back so quickly and with a huge pay rise. Obviously I want him to do well but in my life as a Celtic fan i don’t think Ive ever had such apathy towards an appointment.
