The Scottish FA has confirmed that the 33 year-old will take charge of his first ever game of his refereeing career at Celtic Park when the hosts face off against the Scottish Premiership newcomers.

Wilson only referee’d eight top-flight matches last season spending majority of his season in either the Scottish Championship or Scottish League One. He did have some Premier Sports Cup experience a few weeks ago taking charge of the Kilmarnock v East Fife match at Rugby Park.

The inexperienced whistler was not involved in a game last Saturday, and the previous match he was in the middle for was Airdrieonians against Ross County on the opening weekend of the Championship season.

Wilson will be joined on-field by Assistant Referee 1 Chris Rae and Assistant Referee 2 Graham McNeillie. Meanwhile, John Beaton is at Clydesdale House manning VAR duties with David Roome supporting him on AVAR.

Both Celtic and Falkirk met each other in the quarter-final of last season’s competition. Brendan Rodgers’ side ran out 5-2 winners, but the Irishman was complimentary of the way the Bairns approached the game.

John McGlynn’s men have had a difficult start life since upon their welcome return to the top tier of Scottish football. Falkirk were beaten 3-1 by Livingston on Saturday which followed their 2-2 draw with Dundee United at Falkirk Stadium last Sunday.

It will be Celtic’s first game at Celtic Park on a Friday night for over 10 years. It may have an unusual feel to it. Since Ronny Deila’s side hammered Dundee 5-0 on Friday, 1 May 2015 which meant Celtic were one game away from securing four-in-a-row, we’ve had the pleasure of watching the Hoops on Wednesday nights, Thursday evenings, Saturday 3pm, Sunday lunchtimes, and even a Tuesday afternoon! But never a Friday 7:45.

The match will be shown live on Premier Sports 1 whilst for Celtic supporters outside Britain and Ireland, Celtic TV will provide full coverage of the game.

The game counts on Celtic’s HCTS so is important for those – if Celtic get to Hampden – who are usually lucky in the mysterious ticket office ballots.
