Celtic women have recently turned professional, but it was a frustrating start to their campaign today, under new manager, Fran Alonso. The Ghirls have enjoyed a successful pre-season with their new coach, but were forced to share the spoils this afternoon as they drew 0-0 with Glasgow Women. The stalemate came in the first group game of the newly structured SWPL Cup, and despite dominating throughout, Celtic couldn’t convert the chances to make their possession tell.
The Hoops carved out four decent opportunities in the first half, but a combination of blustery conditions and good goalkeeping kept them at bay. The introduction of Summer Green at half-time offered another offensive option and she immediately sent a powerful drive through a swarm of bodies, but her effort was held by the goalkeeper again.
Green and Teegarden created further chances for Celtic, with Giard and Sarah Ewens both seeing their headers go inches wide. Despite the opportunities, control of possession and lack of pressure from Glasgow, it wasn’t to be in the new coach’s opening competitive match.
Celtic Women now sit joint second in their group, after Spartans managed an 80th minute winner against St Johnstone to take top spot. The Ghirls now look to compound the Perthshire clubs misery as they take on St Johnstone in the second group game of the Cup at McDiarmid Park on Sunday.
