Callum McGregor will likely face up against Toni Kroos in Scotland’s Euro 2024 opener against Germany after the Real Madrid star decided to come out of retirement for the tournament. The 34-year-old decided to pull on the Die Mannschaft jersey again after being persuaded by Julian Nagelsmann.

The Celtic skipper is normally one of the first names on Steve Clarke’s team sheets, meaning he will do battle with the decorated Madrid central midfielder again, having competed with him during the UEFA Champions League last season. Kroos and McGregor faced up in the game at Celtic Park in which Celtic were brilliant for an hour and spurned a few chances to go ahead before the quality of Carlo Ancelotti’s team carried them to a 3-0 win.

It is morale-boosting for the German people that they will be able to call upon Kroos; however, CalMac will be hoping that he and his Scotland teammates can nullify the star man.

Scotland face Germany in the opening game of the competition at the Allianz Arena in Munich in what will be an enthralling encounter between Clarke’s team and the tournament hosts.
